How does the Schengen 90/180 rolling window work?

You can spend up to 90 days inside the Schengen Area within any rolling 180-day period. As days pass, your earliest trip dates fall off the back of the 180-day window and free up new balance. You don't get 90 fresh days all at once on re-entry. Example: enter Spain Jan 1 and leave Mar 1 (60 days used), and inside the rolling 180-day window you only have 30 days left.
